When 99% is a failing grade
A test of time, endurance, and interference
Imagine taking a weekly quiz of 1,000 in-depth questions covering halacha and engineering. The answers differ from week to week, but scoring 100% is the only acceptable grade.
Sounds tough?
That’s the test your eruv has to pass each week.
An eruv can easily be comprised of more than 1,000 components. Each component relies on the mercy of the elements, with storms, sun rays and telecommunication companies working against them. Parts rust and erode… cable wires are altered… tree branches grow… Slowly and almost imperceptibly, psulim are created.
Most psulim are caught and corrected by local checkers. But some can only be detected with professional tools and training. These issues can remain undetected for years, tragically resulting in ongoing, unknowing chillul Shabbos for entire cities.
In the USA alone, there are approximately:
230
community eruvim
900
miles of eruv boundries
8,640
psulim developing
each year
86,400
eruv poles

“It’s a chov kodesh on every Rov and every community to see that the eruv is kosher. If you’re living in a community with an eruv, you have an achrayus to see that your balei batim are not mechalel shabbos.”
HaRav Shmuel Fuerst shlita, at Annual Conference of Agudah Synagogue Rabbanim

“If anyone has an eruv that hasn’t recently been looked at, I would DEFINITELY recommend them getting it looked at by Rabbi Francis. He mamesh knows his stuff and had great, out-the-box ideas for how to improve things.”
Rabbi Chatzkel Greenberg, Minneapolis
